Do you have VA health care but don’t need to use the emergency room? The VA provides urgent care services to eligible veterans at private intranet urgent care clinics. Use VA Urgent Care to treat minor injuries and illnesses that are not life-threatening, such as colds, strep throat, sprained muscles, and skin and ear infections. There are 4,000 nationwide to choose from, so one is probably just around the corner. Just show your veteran health card. Easy!

Veterans have a unique choice of where they receive their health care. Because of your service, you are eligible to apply for VA health care. When you enroll in VA care, you join our nation’s largest integrated health care system with experts who understand the health issues of the veteran population and services.

Nearly 9 million veterans receive their health care at more than 1,200 VA facilities across the country. Most veterans receive free health care services at the VA, including regular checkups with their primary care provider and appointments with specialists (such as cardiologists, gynecologists, and mental health providers). You can also access veterans’ health care services, such as home health care and geriatric (elderly) care, and you can get medical equipment, prosthetics, and prescriptions.

Last year, the VA provided more than 116 million healthcare encounters for veterans, and 90% say they trust the VA to deliver care. You can hear many of their stories and why they choose to receive their care from the VA.

Each veteran medical benefits package is unique. You must include care and services that help:

  • Treats illnesses and injuries,
  • Prevents future health problems,
  • Improve your performance,
  • And improve your quality of life.

All veterans receive coverage for most treatments and services, and some are eligible for additional benefits such as dental care.

In addition, female veterans can receive primary health care, breast and cervical cancer screening, childbirth, maternity care, and other gender-specific services.
